Costs
During our project duration, we are establishing sources of revenue, such as rental income from events, fees from companies wishing to book a workshop, or other services. Similarly, users will – as is customary at these types of places – eventually need to pay for their use.
What kind of fees are we talking about?
- In the future, fees will be charged for certain areas, devices or offers in the RUB Makerspace, for example per time unit. The billing of machine minutes and other fees is common in many makerspaces and fablabs.
- Memberships including regular contributions are an obvious funding instrument in autonomous makerspaces and similar organizations. However, such a model is rather uncommon at universities, at least in research and teaching. Memberships in some form may nevertheless be a long-term consideration for the RUB Makerspace.
- We would like and are working to ensure that basic access to the Makerspace is also possible in the long term without obstacles and costs. This includes, for example, the general co-working areas.
- RUB-internal co-working is flexible and does not require a lot of administrative effort. However, the apportionment of costs may also have to take place here in the future for budgetary reasons and for reasons of fairness.
Apart from refinancing such an incredibly cost-intensive project, the pricing of our services is also about fairness. By providing our infrastructure completely free of charge, for example to companies, we can contribute to a distortion of market competition, which we naturally do not intend to do. Nor do we aim to deprive other makerspaces and fab labs of their users.
Knowledge Sharing
The active sharing of knowledge and learning from each other is and remains the most important currency for the community. Therefore, regardless of any monetary issues, please try to be open, support other makers and document your project for the public.
