Materials and Storage
“Making” almost always involves working with materials. That’s why handling and storing a wide range of materials, supplies, and goods is an important topic in the makerspace. At various locations, there are opportunities to store items and projects with us.
In this folder you will find additional documents such as photos of inventory, operating instructions, templates, samples, and other resources intended to make your work easier. As always: together we are stronger — we appreciate every contribution to our shared knowledge and experience!
General Rules for Using Items
- Items stored in publicly accessible areas are generally available for on-site use — non-destructively, for a maximum of one day, and including putting everything back after you are finished (please observe any labels if present).
- For consumable materials, rule 1 only applies if the material comes from the Treasure Chest.
- Items stored in the central warehouse, offices, workshops, or otherwise locked areas may only be issued and used after prior arrangement.
- Project boxes and experimental setups belonging to others are off-limits.
#TreasureChest – shared (consumable) materials
The makerspace cannot finance or provide the materials for your project. However, in the spirit of collaborative and sustainable work, we provide storage space — treasure chests — with donated materials of all kinds for communal use. This means:
- If, for example, you purchased 3D printing filament, a wooden board, or too many LEDs for your project and later have usable leftovers you no longer need, we would be happy if you made them available to the community.
- If you are missing an electrical resistor or a piece of wood for your project, there’s a good chance you might find what you need in our “treasure chest.”
- In day-to-day operations, we also ensure that new users or groups with limited funds (for example, school students) can receive leftover materials from the “treasure chest” to help them take their first steps as makers.
Wir freuen uns sehr über Restmaterial für die #Schatzkiste und über Sachspenden aus den oben genannten Bereichen, die wir der Allgemeinheit zur Verfügung stellen können.
Making treasures visible
Since we don’t want to hide these treasures but make them recognizable to everyone, it is important that you label such materials with the hashtag "#TreasureChest" (using stickers, handwritten labels, a label printer, etc.).
Bitte nimm nicht ungefragt Materialien, auf denen Du den Hashtag #Schatzkiste nicht finden kannst. Sprich uns bei Unklarheit einfach an!
Project Storage and Project Boxes
A project is rarely completed in a single day. For practical reasons, you may therefore want to store your materials and project with us temporarily. We offer limited space for this purpose. Important: we cannot assume liability for stored items, and the storage area is openly accessible to the community. We also ask that the designated space be used responsibly and only for a limited period.
- Please always sort your items into one of the many available boxes and label them with your name and project title.
- Storing anything larger than one of the boxes must be discussed with the team on a case-by-case basis.
- Project boxes must be put away after work — (exclusively) in the project storage area in the basement level or in the lockers on the ground floor.
Important information about project boxes and storage
- Do not store hazardous materials in your project box under any circumstances! The makerspace also has facilities for storing hazardous goods. Just talk to us about it. PS: Batteries and similar items are also hazardous materials!
- The lockers and cabinets are not intended for long-term project storage and can generally only be used for a single day. If they remain occupied longer, they will be opened and cleared.
- Items left unlabeled and outside a project box may, after 48 hours and without consultation with the owners, be transferred into the makerspace inventory for use in the #TreasureChest!
Additional Storage Locations
In addition to the project storage area, the RUB Makerspace also has a central warehouse in the basement level and a storage room in the lower basement. These storage areas are intended for the makerspace’s operational purposes and are not freely accessible to users. For example, this is where our hazardous materials cabinets are located, and where consumables, repair materials, furniture, and various other items are stored alongside hazardous substances.
