Maker in Residence

To support the transformation of the Ruhr region, students interested in founding startups as well as innovation-oriented researchers need new ideas and guidance. To this end, we aim to invite international experts who bring personality, talent, and expertise. People working in the RUB Makerspace should benefit from their experience.

The Core of the Project

Once a year, for a period of up to 10 weeks, a Maker in Residence becomes part of the RUB Makerspace team and receives funding for accommodation, materials, and an honorarium. The role of these residents is to share their technical or creative knowledge with the Makerspace groups, create projects together, initiate innovative ideas and workshops, and “bring in fresh energy.” Traditional disciplinary boundaries should also be challenged, allowing for experimentation with new ways of thinking.

Makers in Residence Worldwide

The concept of Makers or Artists in Residence is not new. Inviting innovative minds and supporting them in working from their own workshop or studio is an idea that dates back long before Leonardo da Vinci—and for good reason. It is a good idea that can provide significant value and lasting impact for everyone involved, both directly and indirectly.

Some recent examples of Makers in Residence from around the world:

  • The European Commission operates a makerspace at its Joint Research Centre and offers a Makers-in-Residence program.
  • The residency program by Lab64—the makerspace at the renowned Stanford University in Silicon Valley.
  • The Australian National University offers external individuals with a project idea three months of access to its makerspace as residents.
  • The Chicago Public Library awards annual positions for Makers in Residence. The residents’ work culminates in a public exhibition.

Support

The project is funded through donations that we continuously raise. More details and information on ways to contribute can be found through the Fundraising Office.

  • Maker in Residence 2023 was made possible through the support of the Stiftergemeinschaft of Sparkasse Vest Recklinghausen.
  • Maker in Residence 2024 is made possible by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation.
